Comedian and presenter, Joe Lycett will be in conversation with Labour MP Jess Phillips at this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival, it was announced today (WED).

It’s been a big year for Phillips, who won Celebrity Bake Off in March, and was all over the news in July after taking her 10-year-old son to do his homework on the front step of 10 Downing Street, to highlight the problems caused by an increasing number of schools closing early.

Lycett talks to his good friend Jess about her ability to win headlines and her passion for television programmes that represent the whole of the UK. She will also tell him why she thinks there isn’t enough political satire on TV anymore and the big difference she thinks female political correspondents, including Laura Kuenssberg are making.

Described as a heroine by JK Rowling after the publication of her first book ‘Everywoman’, Jess’s passion for improving the world and empowering women is infectious as is her self-depreciating wit.

Jess Phillips MP said: “I’m excited to be taking part in the prestigious Edinburgh TV Festival and keen to talk about how important it is that TV producers ensure every voice across the UK is heard.”

Joe Lycett said: “Jess thinks I'm going to go easy on her because we're friends, but nothing could be further from the truth. I'm going to go easy on her because I am a coward.”

Advisory Chair, Kelly Webb-Lamb said: “Jess is one of the funniest, smartest and most important women out there right now, and with the brilliant Joe Lycett sitting next to her, this session is sure to strike the perfect balance between political and industry discussion and pure Brummie banter.”

The session is produced by Cat Lewis, CEO and Executive Producer, Nine Lives Media.

As a Festival and a charity, the Edinburgh Television Festival is committed to helping young people from all backgrounds gain access to the TV Industry. It runs two young talent schemes, Ones to Watch and The Network.

Both schemes aim to ensure that the people working in television are as diverse as the audience watching it.
