WEEK 2

How to Lose Weight Well

On HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT WELL Dr Xand van Tulleken and Dr. Helen Lawal ask members of the public to road test the most hyped-up and written about diets on the market today. Dieters are divided into three categories; CRASHERS on short term diets, SHAPE SHIFTERS on six week programmes and LIFE CHANGERS on bespoke three or four month dieting plans, especially designed by Xand and Helen. Café cook Stacie Stewart helps turn the diets into delicious dishes.

In this episode the CRASHERS are best friends LAURA and GELLNER from London who have only two weeks to shape up for their spa day. Mum-of-two Laura is on the high-fibre Pritikin Diet but can she give up her beloved cheesecake? Best friend Gellner, tries the Protein Pacing Diet, eating around 20g of protein every 3-4 hours…. How will they get on?

This week’s SHAPESHIFTERS are sisters Aishia and Karlette who want to slim down for their birthday party in six weeks time. Ketchup-loving hairdresser Aishia tries out the plant-based Greenprint Diet, designed by Beyonce’s personal trainer. All animal products are gradually eliminated until the diet is fully vegan. Sister Karlette is following the Centr app designed by Chris Hemsworth, that offers meal plans, workout videos and wellness regimes. Can they both stick to their superstar diets?

The LIFE CHANGERS are truckers Adain and Gerry from Manchester who have four months to slim down for a hot tub party. Xand has designed Adain’s prep-heavy “Here’s One I Prepared Earlier” Diet where Adain will have to get used to prepping and cooking all his food. Gerry is going on Helen’s “Service Station Diet” which involves an exercise regime and making healthy choices on the go.  Both are committed but whose diet will triumph?

Xand and Helen also investigate some scientific ways to weight loss and the more extreme dieting methods out there. On this show Xand tests out the future of home fitness: from celebrity-favourite, the Peloton bike, to Fiit – the so-called “Netflix of fitness” with its on-demand classes, to the futuristic VR flying machine, the Icarus, that has Xand hurtling through a virtual world at flying speed!

In the second strand Helen finds out about the strong link between smell and appetite. She meets gastronomic chef Jozef Youssef and trials a very unusual nasal device on some unsuspecting volunteers – with very surprising results!
