Sarah Beeny's Little House, Big Plans

In this new series, property expert Sarah Beeny and award-winning architect Damion Burrows meet those who are brave enough to take on the challenge of converting their small living spaces into bigger places.  Little House Big Plans reveals that no matter how small your home or tight your budget you can create your own grand design.

In this episode, hair salon receptionist Leah and her husband Sam, a landscaper and builder, have plans to double in size their two-bedroom cottage in Wiltshire into a home big enough for their 4 children, a load of musical instruments and a bunch of family pets. But the pandemic and a shortage of supplies means that things do not go to plan. Damion visits Sam and Matt, who have transformed their traditional three-bedroom home with the addition of an ultra-modern cubist extension. He also meets David and Lindsay in Bristol, whose big plans were to build a sustainable, eco-house on a brown fill site.

Depp Vs Heard

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, the A-listers with the most tumultuous relationship in Hollywood history, have spent the last six weeks locked in court – battling a defamation case that could see one of them receive a payout of over $100m. Accusations of adultery, drink and drug abuse, and allegations of domestic and sexual abuse from both parties are unlike anything that ‘La La Land’ has seen before.

The case rests on an op-ed for the Washington Post written in 2018 in which Amber Heard described herself as a ‘public figure representing domestic abuse’. Depp was not explicitly mentioned, but claims the piece implicates him because it refers to past accusations Heard made when she sought a restraining order against him.

Their relationship had been under the spotlight from the moment they met on the film The Rum Diary and Depp announced his split from long-term love Vanessa Paradis. The couple who were drawn together by passion have been driven apart – and neither partner comes out of this process looking good. Throughout the case, 120 witnesses have given evidence, and some of the world’s most famous faces have found themselves name-checked.

This complicated story has become far more than a case about defamation. This is a window into a world of toxic relationships, addiction, broken families, and abuse, which no one in Hollywood would ever want the world to know. We take a look at a case that has revealed a sordid world just beneath a Hollywood’s glamourous surface.

Dirty Rotten Scammers

WEEK ONE

Episode 1

Sally Flood received a large inheritance from her father, and thought the best place for it was a property investment. But when her lawyers instructed her to transfer the money for her deposit, little did Sally know that the lawyers emails had been hacked. As she sent ID documents and more to the lawyers she’s now worried that the scammers might not just profit from her money, but also her data, so Michelle and Mavis are on the case to reassure Sally this is the last scam she’ll be caught up in. Cariad had a call about suspicious activity on her account, she was nervous it was a scam so called her bank. When she was on hold to them, she was called by what she thought was also her bank, so took the call. The Fraud team that called her was nothing of the sort, and she lost out to the tune of £7000. Distraught at the financial loss Cariad wants a complete online overhaul to feel safe moving forward, and the ethical hackers are just the people to provide that [with a little help from Mavis and Michelle]. Also  in the episode – DCI Marc Cananur talks us through Kent Police’s prosecution of a disgruntled employee turned cyber hacker.

Episode 2

Robyn and her boyfriend had a deposit saved for a house, as they prepared to complete, their financial advisor requested some money from their deposit but the advisor’s emails had been hacked, and Robyn and her partner found themselves ten thousand pounds worse off. Robyn has exhausted all avenues in terms of getting her money back and as she prepares to buy a house all over again wants to know that her every transaction is safe from any potential scams. Adris received a call in the middle of the night from his bank flagging suspect activity on his account. He was told he would be sent a code to protect his account – in reality this code was to validate a transfer to a seperate online account, for £1000. He is now concerned that his online behaviour may have been the reason he was targeted and wants to tighten his security. Also in the show we meet Maureen, from Greater Manchester Police’s ‘Scambusters’ team as she reaches out to community members exposed to scams.

Episode 3

After tough shifts on a covid ward Nurse Melissa received a call that her savings were under threat, and exhausted from her work she went along with everything the scammers said. But when she realized what had happened it was too late – and she’d lost a five figure sum. The team of ethical hackers discover she is still potentially exposed online, and there’s work to be done to make sure she never gets scammed again. The team also hear the story of ransomware scammer Zain Qaiser, who was part of an international hacking ring that was fleecing people for huge figures. And after being ripped off for £2000 Natasha is worried she’s been added to a suckers list, and wants to know what she can do to stop being contacted by scammers who want their hands on her cash.

Episode 4

Tom runs a business selling beauty products online and noticed a significant shortfall in his accounts not long after he’d clicked on a link he believed to be from an online auction site. Over 3 months, in incremental amounts, scammers had taken £14000 from Tom’s accounts – and failed to recover the money. Now he wants to be sure there’s nothing else left online that might leave him exposed to future scams and hacks. Caroline transferred almost £1000 to the “Lloyds Fraud Team” safe account…. But quickly realized she’d been scammed – the team of ethical hackers are on the hunt for why she may have been targeted and how she can avoid being caught out again.

Episode 5

Millie got a text from her phone company asking to tweak payment details on her account and with the pandemic affecting her business she responded quickly so not to lose out on anything. Then she got a call…the scammers were able to persuade her to take out a £10k loan and overdraft by using her security information, as well as emptying her business account. Now Millie is convinced she’s been added to a suckers list and wants Michelle and Mavis’ help to get the scammers off her case.  Zara’s emails were hacked when she was expecting a large payment from her solicitors as a result of the sale of her Father’s home. After scammers accessed her emails they intercepted emails from her solicitor and got inheritance money sent to their account rather than hers. Having lost more than 40 thousand pounds, Zara needs Michelle and Mavis to make sure she’s secure online. Also in the episode, the National Crime Agency talk us through the operation to bring down a website publishing people’s data, and raking in thousands in the process.

The Repair Shop

Today in the Repair Shop, Jay Blades and the team bring four treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life.

First to arrive at the barn is a musical challenge for the barn’s instrument expert Pete Woods.  John Barnes and his daughter Hazel have a very precious cornet that once belonged to John’s wife, and Hazel’s mum, Kath.  Kath started playing the cornet when she was just 6 years old, and first met her future husband John in theCleethorpes band they both played in as children. Kath and John married at 20 and were together for 58 years until Kath was diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and died last year. Kath passed on her passion for music to her daughter Hazel, and now Hazel hopes to be able play this cornet again in memory of her mum. A Repair Shop team effort is required from Pete Woods and Suzie Fletcher to get the cornet, and its case, looking and sounding it’s best.

Next to arrive at the barn, a racy toy that’s hit the skids. Sheree and Paul Walker have a wooden ride-on rocking motor-bike that needs the attention of wood specialist Will Kirk. This unusual toy was bought by Sheree’s late dad Bob, a passionate motor bike enthusiast who even raced in the Isle of Man TT and who wanted to pass on his passion for biking to his grandkids. Unfortunately during Bob’s battle with dementia, the bike was stored in the garden under a tarpaulin leaving it tarnished and less than its best - but now Sheree and Paul would like to see it back up and running for their children to enjoy, and to keep Bob’s memory alive.

Next to be called into action are the barn’s soft toy specialists, Amanda Middleditch and Julie Tatchell. Keith Jones form Cheshire has a small, but very important young monkey in need of their care. The monkey belonged to Peter, Keith’s partner of nearly 15 years, before he died after catching Covid. Although Keith has always heard about monkey, he had never seen him until going through Peter’s possessions he came across him in a small box. Sadly, monkey was showing all the signs of an ageing toy that had been loved for many decades, and Keith is hoping the bear repair pair can work their magic and get Monkey back on his feet.

Finally, an important period of British history encapsulated in a fragile and fading autograph book. The book belonged to Helen Brooke’s great aunt, Cynthia Maguire, a Suffragette who campaigned for votes for women in the early 20th century. Thebook contains messages and signatures of many of the most notable suffragettes of the time, including Emmeline and Sylvia Pankhurst. This incredibly important historical record of the campaign for women’s votes is in the hands of the barn’s book binding expert Chris Shaw and embroidery specialist Sara Dennis to ensure it is preserved for generations to come.

Ash Cloud: The Week the World Stopped

This is the minute-by-minute story of one incredible week in 2010 when an Icelandic volcano unleashed chaos in Britain and beyond. The eruption spewed out a vast volcanic ash cloud, which was perilous to jet engine aeroplanes and meant they could not fly. The story is told first-hand by the people on the frontline of this unique natural disaster. Featuring archive and testimony from those responsible for clearing the skies, others who ventured into the air to understand the threat in more detail and the stars stuck at home and aboard. We also hear the stories of the epic journeys thousands had to make to get home. This all played out over the Easter break and at a time of political uncertainty. As we look back at the mass disruption that paralyzed the country in 2010, we ask if a disaster like this could ever happen again.
