Flat Out Fabulous

BRISTOL/ECLECTIC ELECTRIC

Flat Out Fabulous is a unique makeover show for Generation Rent full of tips and inspiration for renters. You don’t have to own your own home for our stylish yet thrifty interior designer to come knocking. Whinnie Williams is a design queen who dares to be different, and she believes that if housemates clubbed together and rolled their sleeves up, for just the cost of a big night out, you can boujee up your living room and transform it into a sick pad. Whinnie and her co-host Tyler West are passionate about showing that home renovations don’t have to cost a fortune – you can have that million pound look for less. Scouring vintage shops, online auctions and with loads of smart, money saving upcycling ideas and decorating tips, she’s about to share how anyone can do it.

Fun loving, festival going flatmates Eleanor, Amber and Hollie want a living room that reflects their personalities and party lifestyle. Eleanor and Amber are not only flatmates but sisters that live together and work together, having opened up their own hair salon a few years ago. Hollie is like a sister to them and also works with them in the Bristol salon. These girls are working long hours together and want a space they can really call their own. Whinnie and Tyler are on hand to help and are going all out to give the girls what they want. Whinnie’s eclectic electric vision involves a vivid mix of bold colours, animal prints and a bit of ravey neon. She’s throwing in a hanging floral flower display, a marble style breakfast bar, funky wallpaper and an upcycled mirror to really glam up the space. The girls are designing their own gin glasses and making bespoke terrazzo pots, whilst Tyler helps give the fire place a glow up in gold. The eclectic vison is casting some doubt amongst the housemates who aren’t keen on pink but will Whinnie change their minds when she pulls all these different elements together?

Housemates and bandmates George, Oli and Harry moved to the big smoke to pursue their dream of making it in the music industry but their current digs do not reflect the rock and roll lifestyle they hope to lead. They need Whinnie and Tyler’s help to turn their basic and cluttered living room into a space that’s full of inspiration where they can host, rehearse and record music. Whinnie has a big task ahead of her, taking on her biggest room yet for just £650. She wants to create a surprise silhouette face feature wall and give the housemates a soundproof vocal booth perfect for recording. She tasks the guys with designing and sewing their own stripy pillow cases and trusts Tyler to help them make some bespoke candles. The housemates also make some 60s inspired pop art for a fraction of the cost of the real thing and Whinnie upcycles a drinks trolley for their special space. The housemates were hoping to lose their current orange and white theme, but Whinnie has other ideas.

Whinnie and Tyler are back in Bristol meeting Ciaran, Keith Fergal and Eden, four friends that are in need of a new living room. The lads love living together but their living space needs some serious work. They’ve got fly tip sofas and cables all over the place. They are a creative bunch and with Keith’s love of Asian zen, Whinnie’s going for a Japandi theme. Japandi is a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian minimalist styles. She’s working to her lowest budget yet but has big hopes for this space with a colour block mural and a surprise round window feature. The housemates are not afraid to get their hands dirty and all chip in to get the room painted. Whinnie has Ciaran helping Jono the chippy making a bamboo fringed coffee table from scratch and sets Tyler the task of making some artwork with the housemates using wood offcuts. Whinnie gets the lads shopping in a bargain warehouse store to find dressing items for the tight budget. The housemates are not convinced by Whinnie’s new colour scheme but can she turn it around?

Old friends Connor, Chloe and Albi are hoping the ‘Flat out Fabulous’ team can give the dullest room in their house a new lease of life. Whinnie thinks her ‘Chill/Lux’ vision will have the living room feeling less like a squat and more like a cosy home they can hang out and host in. Her vision blends wooden objects with a green and white colour palette and is just what this group needs. Tyler gets started with painting the living room whilst Whinnie and Albi make some cheap curtains to replace the cardboard box that is currently keeping the light out. The group head off to a wood reclamation site to find out what you can do with recycled wood and also pick up some shelves for their space. The housemates create some artwork for their new space pressing flowers and the boys upcycle a drawer as art for their new shelves. Albi has his heart set on hanging onto his gaming corner, but Whinnie has other ideas and wants Jono to a build a simple rustic dining table with benches, not leaving much room for gaming. Will the risk pay off?

FULHAM/POSH PASTELS

Whinnie and Tyler are in Fulham in London meeting Robin and Jasmin, two housemates that are polar opposites when it comes to taste but love living together. Robin works for a leather company, likes grey tones and the finer things in life, whilst Welsh art teacher Jasmin loves lots of splashes of colour and a vintage bargain. Their living room is a great space but it’s grey and doesn’t reflect either of their creative personalities or how they want to save money renting. They’re hoping Whinnie and Tyler can help make the space their own. Much to his displeasure, Whinnie’s tasked Robin and Tyler with making expanding foam photo frames whilst she and Jasmin design sofa cushions. Robin’s not certain about the powder pink chairs he and Whinnie paint and the lilac walls of the living room. Whinnie’s promising to surprise them with a wavy console table in front of a hand painted patterned wall and a stone effect top shelving unit come desk. With two conflicting housemates, a big room and a tight budget, will our queen of thrift be able to bridge the divide between the housemates and get this makeover over the line?

Trucking Hell

Episode 1 - Disaster strikes on the M1 when a 44-tonne truck carrying all the ingredients for a full-English Breakfast catches fire.  Firefighters are battling to put out the blaze, but its cargo has a dangerous habit of reigniting; making it a tricky fire to fight.  Crouch boss Adam and his recovery team scramble to the scene to clear-up the charred remains, but they have a lot on their plate trying to separate the tractor unit and trailer. The ferocity of the fire has fused them together, so the team need to think outside of the box to come up with a plan to break them apart and get the road open as quickly as possible.

In Hertfordshire, Lantern Recovery operator Michael is out in the fleet’s newest truck when he’s called out to a 26-tonne tarmac truck stuck in a seriously dangerous spot. It’s marooned at the side of the road with traffic coming from all directions. Michael does his best to make his working area safe but he’s almost taken-out by a speeding truck that completely misjudges the traffic and mows into the cones he’s put out to keep himself safe!

Crouch’s newest recruit, ex-firefighter, Mark is on a job to rescue a unit and trailer that’s suffered a gearbox failure.  Its location is giving Mark real a headache, hampered by a load of bollards, he can’t see a way to get his wrecker in front of stricken unit to be able to recover it. Luckily Mark is used to thinking on his feet and eventually gets his truck into pole position. All is going to plan until he mislays the remote control to operate the underlift; meaning this breakdown is left hanging in the balance.

The infamous Skills Test returns as the first challenge the chefs come up against, under the watchful eyes of all three judges. It’s the first time they cook for Monica, Marcus and Gregg and first impressions are everything as their culinary expertise and experience are put on trial.

Tonight’s first test is set by Marcus. The first two professional chefs need to apply classical technique and precise fish preparation skills when asked to prepare and cook Squid with a Herb Vinaigrette on Toast and a Red Wine Sauce. Can the chefs use their 20 minutes wisely and produce the all-important deep, rich and flavoursome red wine sauce?

The remaining two chefs take on Monica’s pastry test. They need to make a Coffee Caramel Poached Pear served with a smooth Praline Cream and a Muscovado Crumb. Will these chefs be able to demonstrate enough pastry know-how to impress the judges or will they crumble under the pressure?

Next up, the four chefs return to the kitchen when they cook their own two-course Signature Dishes. This is the chef’s chance to really stand out from the pack with their energy, passion and individual style. With 10 minutes to select the ingredients and 70 minutes to cook, the chefs must act quickly to produce an accomplished dish that balances the bold flavours and textures of cheese. Will they be brave enough to think out of the box?

Mary Berry: Love to Cook

For Mary, cooking is so much more than assembling ingredients, it’s a way of showing her family and friends that she cares.

Mary teams up with her daughter, Annabel, as they head to Carmarthen Bay to meet forager Craig Evans. Armed with his vast knowledge of edible plants, they indulge in their two loves – the great outdoors and cooking.

Mary then travels to Cumbria to meet Carlisle born Harrison, whose friends helped him to turn his life around and discover solace through the great outdoors. Known as ‘The Fell Foodie’, Harrison takes Mary for a walk, equipped with his trusty backpack to find an idyllic streamside spot. Here he roasts Mary a Seabass followed by a Lemon & Blueberry cake - all made from scratch on a tiny camp stove on the picturesque hillside.

But the highlight are Mary’s four recipes, all favourites of her family and friends. A Roast Fillet of Beef with Fresh Horseradish, served with a Magical Platter of Vegetables that can be cooked ahead allowing you to spend more time with the ones you love. A spectacularly colourful Roasted Pepper, Beetroot & Feta Tart and a scrumptious Crusted Salmon with Samphire, served with a velvety lemon sauce.

Mary also shares some time saving tips on how to spend less in the kitchen and more entertaining, with some of her favourite ideas on how to prep ahead.

Mary’s final recipe is the to-die-for Paradise Chocolate Cake, an indulgent dark chocolate sponge, dripping in chocolate icing and then decorated with beautiful shards of white and dark chocolate.  Spectacular!

Walking Victorian Britain

This brand new series sees historian Dr Onyeka Nubia getting to grips with the story of Victorian Britain, visiting a different area in every episode. From great engineering to global supremacy, the years of Victoria’s reign are often seen as a highpoint in British history but the truth is so much more complex and fascinating. From megalomaniac industrialists to workers fighting for the vote, Onyeka unearths a society riddled with inequality and injustice. But from London to Liverpool and Edinburgh, he discovers a world expanding and changing like never before, filled with cutting edge medicine, technological advancement and no shortage of intriguing characters.

This episode sees Onyeka in Lancashire and West Yorkshire.  During the 19th century, finished cotton became Britain’s greatest export, and Lancashire was at the centre of that industry. But the area didn’t grow any of the cotton itself, which left the county and its economy in a precarious place. When the American Civil War broke out in 1861, the supply of cotton from across the Atlantic ground to a halt.

Onyeka’s walk begins on the west side of the Pennines in Burnley. By the dawn of the Victorian Age, the town of Burnley had established itself as a major producer of cotton cloth. Onyeka begins his walk into Queen Street Mill, the world’s last surviving steam powered weaving mill, before stepping into the Victorian classroom. As Onyeka reveals, before the 1800’s, education in Britain came at a cost. Leaving poorer children with just one place to learn – Sunday school. Before leaving Burnley, Onyeka pays a visit to Turf Moor, the home of Burnley football club.

Wool was England’s ancient industry and was the backbone of its economy for centuries. Onyeka’s walk takes him across the Pennines, to Halifax in West Yorkshire to visit Dean Clough Mills – the largest carpet factory in the world in the in the 19th century, whose products ended up across the globe, and were even enjoyed by Queen Victoria, on the floor of Buckingham Palace.

Onyeka heads to one small corner of Bradford that had a very particular role in shaping the city’s Victorian grandeur, before heading west, to take in the largest silk mill in the Victorian world. Onyeka’s walk finishes on the outskirts of Bradford, at one of Northern England’s greatest Victorian experiments. In the 1840s, a successful mill owner and local politician, came looking for the perfect undeveloped site to build his great industrial and social legacy aimed to prioritise welfare AND profit.
